쓰레기의 운명은? - 쓰레기 매립지에서 미생물의 역할 The fate of waste - The role of microbes in landfills
소보람은 차를 발효하여 식물성 미생물을 배양하며, 그것을 일종의 ‘렌즈’삼아 세상을 바라본다. 그는 미생물을 만지고, 냄새 맡고, 관찰하며, 이름을 붙여 기록하는 일에 집착한다. 그리고 미생물의 몸을 통해 사라진 동식물을 다시 불러내고, 위로의 노래를 부를 수 있다고 믿는다.
작가는 한국지질자원연구원의 김소정 박사와 협업하여, 쓰레기 매립지에서 발견된 미생물을 자신의 작업실에서 기른 미생물과 함께 배양하고자 시도했으나 끝내 완성하지는 못했다. 그러나 그 과정에서 오염된 환경 속에서도 살아남는 미생물의 경이로운 생명력을 마주했고, 무형의 물에서 형태를 가지게 된 몸이 만들어내는 ‘소리’를 발견했다.
그 소리는 배양 환경에 따라 저마다 다른 음색을 띠며, 작가는 이를 증폭시켜 자동 합주 형식을 실험한다. 또한 오랜 시간 보존해온 미생물과 이미 죽은 존재들의 흔적 속에서 발생한 소리를 통해, 사라졌거나 곧 사라질 동식물의 (울음)소리를 소환하고자 한다.
Soh Boram cultivates plant-based microorganisms through the fermentation of tea, using them as a “lens” to perceive the world. Soh meticulously touches, smells, observes, names, and records these organisms, believing that, through their bodies, vanished plants and animals can be recalled and consoled with song.
In collaboration with Dr. Kim Sojeong of the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources, Soh attempted to co-culture microorganisms found at a landfill with those grown in the studio, although the experiment remained incomplete. What encountered instead was the remarkable vitality of microorganisms surviving in polluted environments, and the “sounds” that emerged as their formless existence took on shape.
Each microbial community generated distinct tones depending on its cultivation environment, which were amplified into experimental automatic ensembles. Through these sounds, arising from preserved microorganisms and the traces of the already dead, Soh seeks to summon the cries of species that have vanished or are on the verge of disappearance.
