Every small city tells its brightest kids the same thing: work hard, get your degree, and get out. This talk pushes back on that advice, arguing that what economists call brain drain carries a cost beyond the balance sheet. A community that keeps exporting its most talented people slowly loses the people who would have rebuilt it.

Using Brownsville, Texas as a case study, the talk argues that nobody is coming to fix brain drain for us, and that the most sustainable economic stimulus a hometown can get is its own people reinvesting in it: opening a coffee shop, hiring a local contractor, treating a vacant storefront as a blank canvas instead of a sign of decay. The payoff isn’t only financial, it’s a generation that no longer has to leave to chase a good life.

This talk draws on local economic data and ends with a call to action for anyone who has ever felt torn between loving their hometown and being told to leave it. A proud Brownsville native, Nalleli Trejo is a dedicated public servant with over twelve years of experience in the public sector, including the last eight years specifically within city government. Driven by a commitment to meaningful civic impact, she is deeply passionate about community development, enhancing the overall quality of life for residents, and championing transparency in local government. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Texas A&M University and a Master’s degree in Public Administration from UT Permian Basin. Outside of her professional role, she treasures spending her free time with her kids, diving into a good book, and exploring the local culinary scene by trying new restaurants. Whenever able to travel, she also loves discovering and supporting unique small businesses in every new community she visits. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
