How does a solid steel engine component literally snap in half?! 🤯⚙️
Inside your engine, the crankshaft is the massive metal spine that converts the up-and-down motion of the pistons into rotational force (torque) to drive the transmission and wheels. It is forged from incredibly dense, heavy-duty steel designed to withstand thousands of pounds of explosive pressure every single second.
However, if an engine suffers from severe oil starvation, hydrolock (water in the cylinders), or extreme detonation, the spinning assembly can suddenly bind up. Because the engine is producing immense kinetic energy, that twisting force has to go somewhere! The sheer rotational torque will instantly exceed the structural limit of the metal, violently shearing the thick steel shaft completely in half! This catastrophic failure is the absolute worst sound a car can make, and it guarantees you are buying a completely new engine block!
