Recalling the heartbreaking childhood moment when her brother was placed in residential care, Rachel Arterburn reflects on the deep impact of the dedicated caregivers who supported her family through his life and eventual passing. Now leading and training a team of care professionals herself, she addresses the growing crisis facing an overworked and underappreciated caregiving workforce. She outlines actionable ways society can shift its culture to properly honor, support, and respect those who step in to hold up our shared humanity. Rachel Arterburn is a speaker, community leader, and advocate for the dignity of care. She serves as the Vice President of the Vinita Area Chamber of Commerce and works in senior care as a Recruitment, Training, and Engagement Coordinator, supporting and developing professional caregivers who serve seniors and families in her region.

Based in Vinita, Oklahoma, Rachel’s perspective is deeply shaped by both her personal and professional life. She is the sister of a brother who was profoundly autistic, an experience that gave her an early and lifelong understanding of what it means to build a life around care, patience, and advocacy. That throughline has guided her work from her early years as a preschool teacher and her work in affordable community housing, to her continued involvement in community efforts centered on care, dignity, and human connection. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
