Couchsurfing in Argentina: Soccer fever, tango and wild Patagonia | DW Documentary

Argentina is in turmoil, as President Milei reshapes the country with radical austerity measures. Subsidies are being cut, the state is shrinking, and reforms are dividing society. What does this mean for the people living there?

The German journalist and travel writer Stephan Orth visited Argentina and travelled through the country couchsurfing. What he found was a divided country going through a tumultuous time: Since Javier Milei took office, Argentina has been experiencing a period of radical transformation. Subsidies are being cut, the public sector drastically downsized, labor rights weakened, and environmental protection laws rolled back — all in the name of a neoliberal shock therapy that has deeply shaken the country.

But despite the crises, Argentinians have not lost their joie de vivre. Buenos Aires remains crazy about soccer, especially during the Superclásico rivalry between Boca Juniors and River Plate. In Rosario, north of Buenos Aires, everyday life is as hectic as ever. The film shows how the economic crisis is affecting people's daily lives in the cities. Meanwhile, in Patagonia, the stunning natural landscape attracts millions of visitors every year. But the country’s transformation can be felt even there.

Between soccer, everyday life in times of crisis, and the sweeping scenery of the Andes, Argentina is a country in transition — divided, contradictory, and full of energy.
