ECHOES | Mariah Wilson and Zebediah Smith | Sony

🐘📸The Power of Images to Protect

“A lot of the stories I tell are stories of people that the world needs more of.”

Mariah Wilson and Zebediah Smith—winners of the Sony Future Filmmaker Awards 2026 Sustainability Prize—have spent over a decade shaping how they capture and tell stories of the natural world.

In this episode of Sony ECHOES, Mariah and Zebediah reflect on the emotional weight of conservation filmmaking, the people at the heart of that work, and their latest film, Bear Guardians, which received the prize and touched hearts around the world.

Their work began with wildlife crime and poaching, but over time their perspective has evolved to explore the more complex realities behind those issues, including the role poverty and lack of opportunity can play.
Increasingly, their films have focused on the people working towards solutions: the carers, conservationists and communities dedicating their lives to protecting, rescuing and rehabilitating wildlife.

Thanks Mariah, Zebediah and all creators who work in bringing these stories to life. 🌱
