One of the most memorable comedy moments from Barack Obamaโ€™s presidency happened at the 2015 White House Correspondentsโ€™ Dinner, when comedian Keegan-Michael Key joined him onstage as Luther, Obamaโ€™s โ€œanger translator.โ€

The idea behind the Key & Peele character was simple: Obama would calmly deliver his thoughts while Luther dramatically โ€œtranslatedโ€ what he was supposedly really feeling. The contrast between Obamaโ€™s controlled delivery and Keegan-Michael Keyโ€™s exaggerated reactions had the room laughing throughout the bit.

But the funniest part came when the roles suddenly started changing. As Obama talked about climate change, his calm delivery became increasingly passionate until Luther was the one trying to settle him down. The official transcript even records Luther joking that Obama didnโ€™t need an anger translator anymore.

That reversal made the entire sketch work. Obama spent most of the performance keeping a straight face while Luther brought the chaos, only for Obama to eventually become the most animated person onstage.

It remains a memorable example of the comedy and celebrity-driven tradition surrounding the White House Correspondentsโ€™ Dinner.
