Airbnb BANS Checkout Chores—Hosts Are FURIOUS!
You paid for the rental. You paid a cleaning fee. Then checkout arrives—and apparently you have been promoted to unpaid housekeeping staff. Airbnb is finally drawing a line over the chore lists some guests find waiting for them. For reservations booked on or after November 20, hosts generally cannot demand cleaner-style jobs such as stripping beds, starting laundry, washing and putting away dishes or taking rubbish offsite. They can still ask guests to put used dishes in the sink, gather towels, sort rubbish and recycling into indoor bins, turn off utilities, return keys and lock up. Cleaning fees are not going away, and guests still have to respect the property and may be charged for damage or unexpected excessive cleaning.
Now hosts are blasting the change. Thousands have backed organized opposition arguing that cleaning used cookware is ordinary responsibility—not professional housekeeping—and warning that higher turnover costs could simply be passed back to travelers. Guests answer that if they already paid a cleaning fee, they should not spend the final morning of their holiday doing the host’s turnover work. Airbnb also says every rule must be disclosed before booking instead of being sprung on guests through messages or signs. We break down what actually changed, what remains allowed and where reasonable courtesy ends and paid cleaning begins.
