Why A Simple "Virus Removal" Cost Me HUNDREDS of Dollars

A buddy of mine dropped off his budget laptop with what he thought was a simple virus. Some annoying pop-ups, nothing major. But the thing customers say is wrong is almost never the thing that's actually wrong. So I cracked it open to follow the breadcrumbs, and what I found underneath turned a five-minute fix into something I did NOT see coming.
This is the reality of running a repair shop: the "small" issue is just the part the customer can see. My job is figuring out the rest.
