How ‘artificial lighting’ could help Australian farmers produce their own fertiliser

Australia imports around 90% of its nitrogen fertiliser, leaving farmers exposed to global supply disruptions and rising costs that flow through to grocery bills.

Imagine farmers producing their own fertiliser on-site, using nothing more than air, water and renewable electricity.

University of Sydney spin-out PlasmaLeap has developed technology that creates "artificial lightning," transforming nitrogen from the air into a fertiliser plants can absorb, a low-emissions alternative to traditional urea fertiliser.

Trialled by Scott McCalman on his Liverpool Plains farm, the technology aims to give farmers greater independence and build a more resilient food system for all Australians.
