땅속 내시경으로 보는 지하의 세계 Subsurface world seen through a borehole logging
엄지은은 카메라를 든 신체를 매개로 비디오, 퍼포먼스, 설치 작업을 전개하며 개인의 주관적 경험이 세계의 리듬과 공명하는 순간에 주목해왔다. 작가는 한국지질연구원 지하수환경연구센터의 황세호 박사와 협업하여, 땅속 세계와 땅 위 세계가 복잡하게 얽혀 있는 서사를 탐색한다.
내시경 카메라는 수천 장의 이미지를 스캔하며 땅의 단면을 따라 천천히 낙하한다. 작가는 산업단지 오염지, 구제역 매립지, 태백 탄광, 무안 싱크홀, 몽골 흉노족 무덤, 아프리카 금광, 고속도로와 터널 공사 현장, 온천 개발지 등 시간과 지역을 넘나들며 탐사가의 이야기를 따라간다. 이 과정에서 ‘보이지 않는 것’이 파생하는 사건들에 주목하며, 영상을 통해 ‘본다’라는 행위가 지닌 복잡한 위상을 드러낸다.
동시에 지하수가 지표 위로 드러난 온천과 피할 수 없는 자연재해의 장면 등 한국과 일본에서 촬영한 장면들을 통해, 작가는 땅의 위와 아래를 오가며 인간의 삶과 죽음을 재배치하고 공동의 치유 가능성을 모색한다. 이번 전시에서는 입에서 입으로 전해져오는 비과학적 이야기와 과학적 탐사의 과정이 교차되며 현대의 풍속도를 그린다.
Uhm Jieun develops works in video, performance, and installation through the mediated body holding a camera, focusing on moments when subjective experience resonates with the rhythms of the world. In collaboration with Dr. Hwang Seho of the Groundwater Environment Research Center at the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources, she explores narratives in which the underground and aboveground worlds are intricately intertwined.
Using an endoscopic camera that scans thousands of images while descending through layers of soil, she follows the stories of explorers across sites including polluted industrial zones, livestock burial grounds, Taebaek coal mines, sinkholes in Muan, Hunno tombs in Mongolia, gold mines in Africa, highways and tunnels, and hot spring developments. Her work draws attention to the events triggered by what is unseen, exposing the layered complexity of the act of seeing.
At the same time, through scenes shot in Korea and Japan such as hot springs where groundwater surfaces and sites of unavoidable natural disasters, she reconfigures human life and death while seeking shared possibilities of healing. In this exhibition, oral traditions and folklore intersect with scientific exploration to portray a contemporary cultural landscape.
