I’m 37 and I’m a bit embarrassed to admit that:
1. I still don’t know what I want to be when I grow up. I’m a lawyer, I have my own business, I’m a mom—and yet I still have so many things I want to try, create, and become.
2. I don’t have many friends. I’m either working or doing something with my family. I know friendship is important too, but between work and family, my plate is already full.
3. I get personally attached to every client. I tell my team not to, but I still do. When a case gets rejected or denied, it hurts. I think about the person, their family, and everything they were hoping for. Sometimes I take it home with me.
4. Sometimes I feel guilty for wanting more. I have so much to be grateful for, but I still have dreams I haven’t achieved yet. And I’m learning that being grateful and wanting more can exist at the same time.
5. I may look confident in my videos, but I dread reviewing them. I’ll film something and feel good about it, and then the second I watch it back, I suddenly notice everything I should’ve done differently.
6. Sometimes I feel like I’m behind. I see other lawyers building multi-million-dollar businesses in just a few years, and I wonder if I should be doing more or moving faster. Then I remind myself that I’m not running their race.
7. Sometimes I wonder if I’m in the right practice area. Fighting for humanitarian immigration benefits is meaningful work, but it can also be emotionally exhausting. Sometimes people hate me simply because I’m doing my job. And when I see survivors retract their stories or give up, I lose some of my energy to keep going.
I’m not trying to be perfect. Just learning, growing, and healing little by little. If you need a safe place to do the same, this is it. Follow along.
