비 갠 오후, 우뭇개해안에서
오전부터 내리던 비가 그치고 하늘이 서서히 열리기 시작하던 시간.
어반스케치를 위해 찾은 성산일출봉 아래 우뭇개해안은 빗물에 씻긴 풍경만이 가진 맑고 깊은 색을 보여주고 있었다.
검은 현무암 사이로 밀려오는 파도와 비구름 너머로 드러나는 하늘, 그리고 묵묵히 그 자리를 지키고 있는 성산일출봉의 모습은 오랜 시간 제주를 오가며 마주했던 수많은 풍경들을 떠올리게 한다.
처음 제주에 왔을 때는 낯선 여행자의 시선으로 풍경을 바라보았다면, 이제는 계절의 변화와 바람의 방향, 비가 그친 뒤의 공기까지도 기억하게 되었다. 애월의 해안길, 하귀의 하천과 다리, 저지리의 골목, 그리고 성산의 바다까지. 그림을 그린다는 것은 단순히 장소를 기록하는 일이 아니라 그곳에서 마주한 시간과 감정을 함께 담아내는 일임을 제주에서 배워왔다.
우뭇개해안의 오늘 풍경 또한 언젠가 사라질 하루의 한 장면이다.
그래서 나는 또다시 스케치북을 펼치고, 바람이 지나간 자리에 선을 남긴다.
시간이 머문 자리에 제주를 기억하기 위해.
An Afternoon After the Rain, at Umutgae Coast
The morning rain gradually came to an end, and the sky slowly began to open.
I arrived at Umutgae Coast, beneath Seongsan Ilchulbong, to create an urban sketch. The landscape, freshly washed by the rain, revealed a depth and clarity of color that only a rainy day can offer.
Waves rolled gently across the black volcanic rocks, while the sky emerged beyond the fading rain clouds. Standing quietly above it all, Seongsan Ilchulbong brought back countless memories from my years of traveling to and from Jeju.
When I first came to Jeju, I looked at its scenery through the eyes of a visitor. Now, I remember the changing seasons, the direction of the wind, and even the fresh air that follows the rain.
From the coastal roads of Aewol, the streams and bridges of Hagwi, the quiet alleys of Jeoji-ri, to the sea surrounding Seongsan, I have learned that drawing is not simply about recording a place. It is about preserving the moments, emotions, and memories experienced there.
Today's view of Umutgae Coast is also a fleeting moment that will one day become a memory.
So once again, I open my sketchbook and leave my lines where the wind has passed.
To remember Jeju where time has quietly lingered.
