Ursula von der Leyen invites Canada to be EU's first 'associate member' | DW News

European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen has invited Canada to become "the first associate member of the European Union." She made the announcement during her State of the Union address, which was attended by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. The EU chief used her speech in Strasbourg to talk about other global threats, from climate change to AI, as well as growing geopolitical uncertainty.

Associate member does not mean full EU membership. According to Ursula von der Leyen's announcement, it would likely mean a much closer partnership with the EU in areas such as trade, defense, technology, research and economic security, without Canada becoming an EU member state or having the same voting rights as members. The exact details have not yet been revealed because this would be a new status that currently does not exist in EU treaties.
