Spain is one of the most visited and livable countries in Europe. Its population just hit an all-time high of 48.85 million people. And yet, a huge part of the country is quietly emptying out. There is a region in central Spain bigger than Ireland where villages are disappearing one by one. Schools are closed. Homes are abandoned. The last doctor has already left. Soria, the least populated province not just in Spain but in the entire European Union, sits only a 90-minute drive from Madrid. Spain has the second-longest high-speed rail network in the world, longer than the entire US. But it connects mostly the same cities over and over while the rest of the country fades away..
