Why The Front Of This Ship Won't Sink 🚢
This 20-year-old MSC ship is longer than 3 football fields. In July, a typhoon hit. It left its repair dock and ended up on rocks. Crews tried to float it back up and failed. The back filled with water and sank, while the front stays up because it is full of air.
That last part is the whole story. A cargo ship sinking usually goes all the way down because nothing stops the flooding. Here the bow compartments stayed sealed, so the trapped air kept the front buoyant while the stern filled — and that's why this ship sinking looks like a photograph of a mistake frozen in place rather than a wreck on the seabed.
The reason crews failed is the same reason it's still there: a grounded hull that heavy doesn't want to float again, and every tide works against you. This is maritime history in the making, but it's also basic engineering — buoyancy is just air and steel in the right proportions.
