Every few weeks, my phone buzzes with a familiar message: “A new software update is available.” Without thinking, I hit download. I know if I don’t, the apps will start crashing, the system will lag, and soon it won’t work the way it should. One thing has remained on my mind every time I perform an update to my phone. We update our devices all the time, yet most of us haven’t updated ourselves in years. We still run on old versions of who we used to be. Old habits. Old fears. Old ways of thinking. My big idea is simple: humans are not meant to be finished products. We’re built for continuous updates. I call this idea “Human 2.0 - The Upgrade Never Ends" Karsten Schenkelberg is a senior at CNU studying Finance hailing from Yorktown, Virginia. He is an Honors student actively involved in the Captain’s Educational Enrichment Fund, as well as a brother of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. He plans to pursue entrepreneurial ventures post graduation, and is currently developing a company with his long time best friend and working with a software start up out of Norfolk. He often spends his free time camping, hiking, lifting weights, and reading. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
