A night of Dennis Bergkamp brilliance ✨⚽️

It’s the summer of 1993. Osvaldo Bagnoli’s Inter have just narrowly missed out on the Scudetto, finishing second behind AC Milan. To close the gap, a major signing is needed. Dennis Bergkamp arrives from Ajax, along with fellow Dutchman Wim Jonk.

Third in the 1992 Ballon d’Or rankings and second the following year, Bergkamp brought a different brand of football to Milan, built on technique, intelligence and unpredictable moments of brilliance.

He scored his first goal against Cremonese, but the real Bergkamp emerged in Europe on 16 September 1993 against Rapid Bucharest. At San Siro, he was unstoppable: three goals, including an overhead kick.

At the end of the season, he lifted the UEFA Cup as the competition’s top scorer with eight goals. He found things more difficult in the league, in a team whose counter-attacking style was less suited to him.

Bergkamp’s time at Inter lasted three years. At Arsenal, he would become one of the greatest players in Premier League history. But that September night had already offered a glimpse of what was to come.
