100 billion mega investment! AstraZeneca doubles down on China biotech boost

At the 9th CIIE in Shanghai, the British drugmaker AstraZeneca unveiled baxdrostat, a first-in-class hypertension drug.

The British pharmaceutical giant has laid out a 15 billion yuan ($2.1B) investment plan through 2030. From CAR-T cell therapy hubs to commercial CAR-T manufacturing hubs, the message is clear: China is no longer just a market — it's an innovation powerhouse.

It is not just AstraZeneca: major European drugmakers are increasingly setting their sights on China's biotech sector, while local biopharma firms are going to great lengths to expand abroad, forging global collaborations to accelerate new growth amid growing global demand for Chinese innovation.
