Around 8.5 million people had been part of the Nazi system, which meant that not only buildings but also institutions, politics, and social attitudes had to be rebuilt. To address this, the Allied powers began the process of denazification, each in its own way. In early 1946, the Allied Control Council issued its first directive related to denazification. The order outlined how members of the Nazi Party, those who had assisted the regime, and individuals who had benefited from Nazi rule were to be identified and treated. This marked an important step in Germany's effort to break with its Nazi past and establish democratic foundations for the future.
