Newborn foals are born without antibodies and must nurse within their first few hours to absorb vital colostrum. While the suckling instinct is active immediately, depth perception takes time to develop. Instead of sight, foals rely on tactile cues and body warmth to navigate, often leading to harmless trial-and-error searching along the mare's neck, chest, or legs before successfully locating the udder.
