US withdrawal from Iraq raises fears of instability amid Iran conflict | DW News

As US troops leave Iraq, the Middle Eastern nation enters a new chapter after nearly a decade of continuous American military presence. The withdrawal was agreed in 2024 under former President Joe Biden and carried out by Donald Trump's administration amid heightened tensions with neighboring Iran. While many Iraqis welcome the departure as a step toward greater sovereignty, others fear it could create an opening for extremist groups to regain strength.

DW News asked Hayder Al-Shakeri, a Research Fellow at Chatham House in London, and James Franklin Jeffrey, a former US ambassador to Iraq who was in office during the last American troop withdrawal in 2011, for their assessment.
