And a race to build the biggest, fastest, most luxurious ocean liner the world had ever seen. Fifteen thousand men worked around the clock. The result was a floating palace - with a heated pool, Turkish baths, and a first-class suite that cost the equivalent of $75,000 in today's money. But something went wrong along the way. The steel was brittle. The rivets were weak. The watertight compartments weren't fully sealed. And on April 10, 1912, the Titanic set sail on its maiden voyage. Four days later, it met its fate.
