For centuries, Koreans brewed makgeolli at home, passing the tradition from one generation to the next. That changed during the Japanese colonial period, when home brewing was banned. Despite decades of hardship, the tradition survived, and today makgeolli brewing is recognized as Korea's National Intangible Cultural Heritage.
