China shield tunneling machine begins final dig for SH-Jiangsu underwater high-speed rail tunnel

Today, the giant 4,000-ton machine Linghang began its final phase of digging for a massive underwater tunnel that will link Shanghai’s Chongming Island to Taicang in neighboring Jiangsu Province.
Eighty-nine meters beneath the Yangtze River, China's domestically developed shield tunneling machine, largest of its kind in the world, is accelerating excavation work on a 14-km tunnel to enable high-speed trains to travel under the river.
While this underground part of the final phase is less than two kilometers long, engineers face a tough challenge. The machine must burrow beneath busy roads and a public park through loose soil and highly unstable underground water pressure. Engineers are using an AI system called I-TBM to automatically adjust the machine's speed and pressure, keeping the ground steady and protecting buildings above.
As a key section of the Shanghai-Chongqing-Chengdu high-speed railway and scheduled to be finished in late 2026, the tunnel will bring high-speed rail to Chongming Island for the first time. This will allow bullet trains to travel at 350 km/h, cutting travel time to Shanghai to just 17 minutes.
