In Rick and Morty Season 8 Episode 5, Rick and Morty are flying through space when the ship detects a massive cryoship that still has power.
Rick immediately gets interested. A ship full of sleeping passengers usually means one thing to him: rich people left their valuables behind, and nobody is awake to stop him from stealing them.
When they board the ship, they discover the passengers came from a destroyed planet and are traveling in long-term cryosleep to a new home. But the ship is not equal at all. Some pods are luxurious, decorated like rich people’s private bedrooms, while the lower levels clearly belong to workers who have nothing.
Rick does not care — until he finds a heavily protected vault containing something extremely valuable: Hypercoal.
When his tech cannot open the vault, Rick chooses the most Rick solution possible: blow the ship open and drag the vault away. Morty tries to stop him because thousands of sleeping people are still onboard, but during their fight, the explosives go off and damage the cryosleep system.
Now everyone is about to wake up.
Rick quickly finds two dead passengers and decides he and Morty will impersonate them. Rick takes the place of Jimmy Jamerson, the son of a wealthy family. When Jimmy’s parents wake up, they think their son has somehow aged into an old man because of a cryosleep malfunction.
Rick realizes Jimmy’s rich status might give him access to the Hypercoal vault, so he keeps pretending.
Morty, meanwhile, wakes up as Chachaco, a lower-level worker forced to clean toilets. He quickly discovers the workers have compliance chips in their heads that shock them if they disobey.
That is when Morty understands the ship’s real system.
The rich “Takeys” take everything.
The poor “Makeys” do all the work.
And Rick’s robbery just woke up an entire society built on exploitation.
