Rivers rarely flow in straight lines. Instead, they develop winding bends known as meanders. Scientists say these curves form through a combination of uneven terrain, water flow dynamics, erosion and sediment deposition. Albert Einstein famously explained the process in 1926 using the behavior of tea leaves in a cup.
