How do we find hope when life brings us the unthinkable—something we cannot control, change, or fix?
We may try to muscle through grief, anxiety, trauma, or heartbreak, but difficult emotions don't disappear. They often surface as anxiety, numbness, avoidance, low motivation, or the need to control. When we shut out pain, we often lose the ability to feel joy.
Katie Kelley Dorn learned this through her work as a licensed therapist and school counselor—but most profoundly as a mother of seven. Drawing on the loss of her beloved sister Ginny, welcoming Ginny's three children into her family, and helping thousands of students and families, Katie shares what she discovered when powering through—and trying to fix everything—stopped working.
Some of life's hardest realities cannot be changed. But surrender is not giving up. It is releasing our grip on what we cannot control, processing what hurts, and turning toward the next step we can take. Unconditional love gives us the safety to face our pain, while emotional skills help us move through it instead of around it.
We don't have to wait for the hard season to end before hope can begin. Hope is something we can learn, practice, and find—even in the middle of what we cannot fix.
Katie is the author of Magnolias in Winter: Finding Hope in Life's Hard Seasons, founder of EmpowerU, and a licensed therapist and school counselor. Learn more at MagnoliasInWinter.com. Katie Kelley Dorn is a school counselor, licensed mental health therapist, entrepreneur, published author, and mother of seven, with more than a decade of experience at the intersection of education, mental health, and leadership.
She has served as a K–12 school counselor and as adjunct faculty and program director at Adler Graduate School, where she aligned led data-driven initiatives to measure program effectiveness and student mental health outcomes. As CEO and co-founder of EmpowerU, Katie has developed scalable mental health skill-building solutions for schools nationwide. She has founded three companies, including two multi-million-dollar exits.
Her work is grounded in one core belief: lasting mental health improvement does not come from fixing people—it comes from teaching the skills that build resilience, agency, and lifelong capacity. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
