The EU and Canada are turning a long-standing partnership into something far more strategic. At a two-day summit in Montreal, leaders unveiled an "Alliance for the Future" spanning trade, artificial intelligence, critical minerals, defense and support for Ukraine, as both sides seek greater economic security and stronger ties amid growing uncertainty in their relationship with the United States. With insights from Stephanie Carvin of the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs at Carleton University, Vina Nadjibulla from the Centre for Strategic Statecraft, and from DW's Brussels correspondent Christine Mhundwa.
