Anthony Dirrell survived a savage, all-out war with Avni Yildirim to capture a vacant super middleweight world title in a brutal 10-round technical split decision at The Armory in Minneapolis. From the opening bell, neither man backed down, turning the Premier Boxing Champions main event into a relentless firefight that pushed both fighters to the limit.

The violence came at a price for Dirrell. An accidental head clash in the seventh round ripped open a cut above his left eye, and the damage became dramatically worse as the fight entered the championship rounds. With blood pouring and the wound deteriorating by the 10th, the referee was forced to halt the action and send the bout to the judges under technical-decision rules.

The scorecards produced a controversial split verdict. One judge shockingly scored the fight 98-92 for Yildirim, while the other two judges awarded Dirrell a narrow 96-94 victory. ESPN also had Dirrell ahead 96-94, handing the American his SECOND WORLD TITLE at 168 pounds.

Dirrell refused to let the gruesome cut erase what he had accomplished. He wanted to keep fighting, insisting that he was determined to finish the battle like a champion. The victory was especially meaningful because it gave him another world title to dedicate to his grandfather, Leon Lawson Sr.
