Primitive Technology: Flat vs Curved Tiles, A Tough Lesson

I tested a variant of roof tie where it is a flat trapesoid with curved up sides to test if I could fit more of them into a kiln and have them cover more roof area than the curved barrel tiles.

It turns out that the reason curved roof tiles are so comon is because the shape gives a long tile more strength throughout its length. After making, firring, and laying the tiles, only 2 of 36 survived. The flat tiles were so weak because of the change of design, I was forced to return to the old variant after a month of wasted effort.

I might take a break from filming tile making now and focus on other interesting projects.
