Why is heavy machinery gear oil so incredibly thick?! 🚜🛢️
When maintaining a standard car engine, you use a relatively thin motor oil (like 5W-30) so it can quickly pump through the block and lubricate the fast-moving pistons. However, inside the transmission and axles of heavy machinery—like a commercial tractor—the environment is completely different!
These heavy gearboxes don't spin as fast, but they deal with an insane amount of torque and heavy lifting. To prevent the massive steel gear teeth from violently crushing each other, mechanics pour in high-viscosity, heavy-weight gear oil. This oil is so thick and sticky that it looks like liquid glass or syrup as it pours! It physically clings to the massive gears, creating a permanent fluid cushion that absorbs extreme pressure and prevents the metal from shattering!
