Lieutenant General (Retd) Ken Gillespie warned that selling Victoria Barracks could put Sydney's safety at risk.
“Ten months ago, 15 people were murdered at Bondi, and ASIO’s Director-General warns that politically motivated violence is becoming more likely than the ‘probable’ threat level suggests,” Mr Gillespie wrote in the Daily Telegraph.
“When police need military support in a crisis, minutes matter, and the Barracks is a secure Army base on the city’s doorstep.
“The Minister has not explained what replaces it.”
