The education system is a mill, and its product has just been made worthless. Generative AI now does — faster and better — nearly everything schools spend fifteen years drilling into children: the recall, the formulas, the essays, the credentials. We are still marching students through an assembly line built for a world that no longer exists. So a brutal question remains: when the machine can do it all, what is actually left worth learning? This talk argues we must tear up the blueprint. Start with the child and expand outward — through the neighborhood, the region, the planet, and back and forth in time — so that learning is anchored in the real, messy world the child lives in, not a syllabus written in some distant center. The skill that survives is the human one: navigating complexity that no model can hand you. And AI, far from the threat we're scrambling to control, becomes the most powerful companion for the adventure at hand. Stop preparing children for life. While a Professor at the Indian Institute of Science, he co-invented the Simputer, aimed to take the benefits of IT to the marginalized. He co-founded Strand Life Sciences that is now a leader in personalized genomic medicine. He co-founded an early Edtech company to transform engineering education in India with the Joy of Engineering, Design, and innovation program.
A Senior Principal Researcher at Microsoft Research India, he co-created Ludic design for Accessibility, a new methodology for thinking about assistive technology solutions. He is the founding co-convener of the Center for Accessibility in the Global South at the IIIT Bangalore. Today, as AI upends how we learn and work, he leads Project Ekalaiva, a bold effort to reimagine Indian education for this new era. His question is one that touches every student: in a world being rewritten by AI, how do we learn to thrive?
