《영원한 것은 없으므로》 — 사라져가는 장승을 찾아서

"도시화로 인해 마을의 풍경이 변화할 때, 수호신이었던 장승들은 어디로 갔을까?"

미신과 신앙이 지닌 힘은 희미해진지 오래다. 장승이 지니고 있던 토속적인 의미 역시 사람들의 기억에서 점차 멀어지고 있으며, 이러한 전통이 앞으로 얼마나 이어질 수 있을지는 확신하기 어렵다.

경기도 광주에는 여전히 마을을 지키는 장승들이 남아 있고, 그 곁에서 삶을 살아가는 사람들이 있다. 이들은 장승을 세우고, 돌보고, 그 의미를 기억하며 전통을 이어가고 있었다. 엄미리에서 만난 한 어르신의 말씀대로 요즘 기술로 잘하려면 얼마든지 더 좋고 정교한 것을 만들어낼 수 있다. 하지만 우리가 잊지 말아야 할 중요한 가치는, 가장 소박하고 있는 그대로의 것들에 있는 것은 아닐까.

영원한 것은 없으므로, 모든 것은 사라지고 다시 생겨나기를 반복한다. 빠른 변화 속에서 사라지고 잊혀지는 것들을 바라보며, 오늘날 장승과 그 주변의 풍경들이 어떤 모습으로 남아 있는지를 기록했다.

그리고 언젠가 이 땅을 걸어가는 사람들에게, 장승이 다시 한번 좋은 기운과 평안을 전해줄 수 있기를 희망하면서...

"As urbanization transforms village landscapes, where have the Jangseung—the traditional guardian deities—gone?"

The power of old superstitions and folk beliefs has long since faded. The local significance once held by the Jangseung (Korean totem poles) is gradually slipping from people's memories, making it difficult to say how much longer this tradition will endure.

Yet, in Gwangju, Gyeonggi-do, Jangseung still stand guard over villages, alongside the people who share their lives with them. These locals keep the tradition alive by erecting the poles, tending to them, and remembering their true meaning.

As an elder we met in the village of Eommi-ri noted, with today's technology, we could easily create something far more elaborate and refined. But perhaps the most important value we must never forget lies in things that are most simple and true to their nature.

Nothing lasts forever; all things repeat the cycle of fading away and being born anew. Watching what is being lost and forgotten in the midst of rapid change, we documented the current state of the Jangseung and the landscapes that surround them.

With the hope that one day, these Jangseung will once again bestow good energy and peace upon those who walk this land...
