How do you fix a P0420 Check Engine Light without buying a new Catalytic Converter?! 🚗💡
If you drive an older car, there is a high chance you will eventually see a P0420 or P0430 diagnostic code on your dashboard. This means your engine's computer thinks your catalytic converter is failing. Because replacement converters cost thousands of dollars, many DIY mechanics use a brilliant, cheap workaround: the O2 sensor spacer!
Your car has a secondary oxygen sensor downstream in the exhaust pipe that monitors how well the catalytic converter cleans the exhaust. By installing a cheap metal spacer (or a drilled-out spark plug defouler), you physically pull the sensitive tip of the sensor out of the direct exhaust flow. This smooths out the sensor's voltage reading, tricking the computer into thinking the exhaust is perfectly clean and instantly shutting off the check engine light!
