When rebuilding a cylinder head, mechanics must install new rubber valve stem seals to prevent engine oil from leaking down into the combustion chamber. However, the top of a metal valve stem has razor-sharp machined grooves designed to hold the heavy spring in place. If you force a delicate new rubber seal over these sharp edges, it will instantly tear!
In this incredibly satisfying engine assembly video, a professional mechanic uses a simple red plastic sleeve to cover the sharp grooves! This allows the rubber seal to slide down perfectly without taking any damage! After the seal is seated, the mechanic removes the red sleeve, drops the heavy steel valve spring into place, and uses a specialized tool to compress it. Finally, they carefully insert the two microscopic metal keepers to lock the entire assembly together! Watch until the very end to find out why making a mistake here will destroy your engine!
