While horses can doze standing up thanks to a specialized tendon lock called the "stay apparatus," achieving vital REM sleep requires lying completely flat.

During deep sleep, horses experience total muscle relaxation (atonia), meaning they must surrender all physical defense to rest their brain. Because full lateral recumbency compresses their large internal organs and leaves them vulnerable to predators, they only do this for 15 to 30 minutes a day in an environment where they feel completely safe.
