Donald Trump recently announced a "historic, infinite-life" Arctic security pact with Denmark and Greenland on Truth Social, claiming the deal grants the U.S. permanent control over Greenland's security and bars foreign adversaries from establishing bases on the island. However, a closer look at the diplomatic reality reveals that nothing on the ground has actually changed. Under the 1951 Defense of Greenland Agreement and existing NATO frameworks, the United States has held extensive basing, overflight, and collective defense rights in Greenland for over seventy years.
