Why you should NEVER start an engine while the transmission pan is removed! 🚗💥
When performing a DIY automatic transmission fluid (ATF) change, removing the bottom pan exposes the sensitive, maze-like valve body. This backyard mechanic tried a clever but highly flawed hack by placing a rubber hose directly over the fluid port and starting the engine, hoping the car's internal pump would cleanly push the old fluid out into an empty jug.
However, automatic transmission fluid pumps generate massive amounts of hydraulic pressure instantly! Without the sealed pan and filter housing to properly direct the flow of fluid, the pressurized ATF violently sprayed straight down out of the valve body, entirely missing the jug and creating a massive, incredibly slippery mess all over the driveway.
