New modelling by Dr Kwok Fai Cheung, a leading ocean engineer from the University of Hawai'i, shows that the Mariana Trench and shallow coral reefs amplify tsunami energy rather than providing protection — contradicting long-held public beliefs.
This is critical because the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) is a densely populated US territory (part of the United States), with thousands of American residents living on the main islands of Saipan, Tinian, and Rota. According to the new data, a local earthquake of magnitude 8.3 or higher near the trench could send a 15-metre (50-foot) wave toward these populated US islands within just 10 to 15 minutes.
Saipan's west coast - home to the tourist district of Garapan, Beach Road lined with schools, and the area around Lake Susupe - would face the worst flooding, with water depths of 3-6 metres (10-20 feet) possible in these heavily populated neighbourhoods. Several areas previously considered safe, including the Mariana Beach Resort, would now flood under updated projections. Chip Guard, a longtime Pacific forecaster, stated bluntly that "the CNMI will get it worse than Guam" because the underwater geography focuses energy right onto Saipan's west side, where most of the US territory's population lives.
