Tech shares on stock markets around the world fell steeply after the US midterm elections, prompted by fears that the Democrats would use their new political power to crack down on artificial intelligence.
Several states elected senators, representatives and governors who have promised to rein in Big Tech and ban or regulate AI data centres. They have become a significant concern for American voters due to their energy usage and environmental impact.
This is in stark contrast to President Donald Trump, who has championed AI, dubbing it "super intelligence". Trump has close ties to some of the tech bosses driving AI development, including Elon Musk and Nvidia’s Jensen Huang. He recently said states "should want as many data centres" as they can get, because they generate "tremendous amounts of money".
In this video, we'll speak to our correspondent in South Korea about the global repercussions of this tech stock slowdown. And our business correspondent tells us that the sea change in Washington is not the only reason investors may be warry about AI.
