During the production of Bruce Almighty in 2002, director Tom Shadyac allowed his supporting cast unusual latitude to improvise, and few seized that freedom as effectively as Steve Carell. Then a relatively unknown correspondent from The Daily Show, Carell played Evan Baxter, the smug news anchor whose on-air composure Jim Carrey's divinely empowered Bruce sabotaged in one of the film's most memorable sequences. As Carell spontaneously produced a torrent of garbled gibberish and absurd vocal contortions, his improvisations proved so relentlessly funny that Catherine Bell, cast as co-anchor Susan Ortega, repeatedly broke character on set. At one point her laughter overwhelmed her so completely that she was reduced to tears in the middle of the news segment, forcing the crew to reshoot takes that her composure could not survive. The episode revealed in miniature the comedic gift that would soon define Carell's career, as the scene's success helped propel him toward leading roles in The 40-Year-Old Virgin, The Office, and eventually a spinoff built around the very character whose meltdown had once left his co-star helpless with laughter.
