It starts with a fight every parent knows: "Five more minutes, Dad." Stephan de Moraes battles his kids over screens almost daily — until one evening it hits him: this was never about screen time, it's about depth. Reading for pleasure has fallen 3% a year for two decades; PISA scores are sliding across the OECD. He's convinced we're entering a "post-literate society," trading deep reading for scrolling — and warns that a shallow society isn't just uninformed, it's controllable. So when he fights his kids about their phones, he's really fighting for their freedom to think. "We fight them because we love them," he says. "We fight them because we are fighting for them."
