Pinglu Canal: China's River-to-Sea Dream — But at What Price?

The Pinglu Canal stretches 134.2 kilometers, from Hengzhou in Nanning to the Beibu Gulf in Qinzhou. It is China's first river-to-sea canal since 1949 and a backbone project of the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor. It accommodates 5,000-tonne vessels and shortens inland voyages by over 560 kilometers. Connecting the Xijiang shipping artery with the Beibu Gulf international hub port, it forms the shortest and most economical sea route from southwestern China to ASEAN.

This video follows the first cargo ship from Nanning Port all the way south—through the Youth Hub to Qinzhou Port at the estuary—to find out what this canal really means for today's China.
