■ 전시 소개
강춘혁 작가는 고향, 정체성, 북한 인권을 주제로 국내외에서 활발히 활동한 작가이다. 회화뿐 아니라, 라이브 드로잉 퍼포먼스, 힙합 등 장르를 자유롭게 넘나들며 자신의 이야기를 풀어내고 있다. 이번 전시 (기억이 머무는 자) 는 강춘혁 작가가 28년의 세월 너머 간직해온 고향의 기억을 화폭 위에 되살려낸 작품들로 구성되었다. 함경도에서 나고 자란 작가는 자유를 찾아 이 땅에 발을 디뎠지만, 분단이라는 현실은 고향으로 돌아가는 길을 끊어놓았다. 물리적으로 갈 수 없는 기억 속 고향을 작가는 붓끝으로 그렸다. 골목에서 뛰어놀던 아이들, 이웃 간에 음식을 나누던 마을 풍경, 철마다 달라지던 하늘이 그 예일 것이다. 작가는 이 풍경들을 단순하고 담백한 회화로 담았다.

​ 이 작품들은 갈 수 없는 곳에 고향을 둔 작가 한 사람의 기억에서 출발하였다. 하지만 지난 시기의 급속한 산업화와 도시화 속에서 정겨운 골목 풍경과 놀이문화를 잃은 것은 한반도 남쪽에서도 일어난 일이며 또다른 누군가의 기억이기도 하다. 담백한 전달을 목표로 한 만큼, 거대한 서사 대신 누군가에게는 한 번쯤 경험해 보았을 유년의 장면, 누군가에게는 살아낸 적 없이 듣기만 했던 이야기를 전해 보고자 한다. 총 3부로 구성된 이번 전시는 1부 (기억의 조각들) 에서는 어린 시절 놀이문화와 일상의 장면을, 2부 (사라진 풍경) 에서는 분단과 도시화 이전의 마을 공동체 풍경을, (기억이 머무는 자리) 에서는 작가의 기억 속 고향 마을을 대형 회화로 마주하게 한다. 작품 앞에 선 관객이 작가의 기억 속 공간을 걸으며, 자신이 두고 온 시간과 장소를 떠올릴 수 있기를 바란다.

■ About the Exhibition
Artist Kang Chun Hyok has built an active career at home and abroad, exploring themes of hometown, identity, and North Korean human rights. Moving freely across genres — painting, live drawing performances, and hip-hop — he channels his personal story into every medium he touches. This exhibition, The Place Where Memories Linger, brings together works in which Kang revives, on canvas, the memories of his hometown that he has carried with him across 28 years. Born and raised in Hamgyong Province, the artist crossed into this land in search of freedom, only to find that the reality of national division severed the path back home. Unable to return physically, he paints the hometown that still lives in his memory — children running through alleyways, neighbors sharing food across a village, a sky that shifted with each season. The artist renders these scenes in simple, understated paintings.

These works begin with the memory of a single artist whose hometown lies beyond reach. But the loss of familiar alleyways and childhood games to rapid industrialization and urbanization is not his experience alone — it happened in the southern half of the Korean Peninsula as well, and it belongs to someone else's memory too. In keeping with the exhibition's spirit of plainspoken honesty, it seeks not to tell a sweeping story, but to offer scenes some visitors may recognize from their own childhoods, and stories others may have only ever heard secondhand. Organized into three parts, the exhibition unfolds as follows: Part 1, Fragments of Memory, presents scenes of childhood games and daily life; Part 2, A Vanished Landscape, depicts village communities before division and urbanization reshaped them; and Part 3, The Place Where Memories Linger, presents the artist's remembered hometown through large-scale paintings. As visitors stand before these works and walk through the spaces held in the artist's memory, we hope they, too, will find themselves recalling the time and place they once left behind.
