가을빛이 짙어진 충남 청양 모덕사 🍁
붉게 물든 단풍 사이로, 면암 최익현 선생의 올곧은 뜻을 만났습니다.

최익현은 조선 말, 나라의 위기 앞에서 목숨을 걸고 직언을 한 선비입니다. 1876년 개항에 반대하며 도끼를 지고 대궐 앞에 엎드려 상소를 올렸죠. 뜻이 받아들여지지 않으면 그 도끼로 자신의 목을 쳐달라는 각오, 바로 '지부상소(持斧上疏)'입니다. 이후에도 의병을 일으켜 끝까지 저항했고, 쓰시마섬에서 순국했습니다.

오늘은 단풍 아래에서 상소문의 한 구절을 천천히 필사해 보았습니다. 한 글자 한 글자 붓으로 옮기다 보니, 수백 년 전 선비의 결기가 조금은 손끝에 닿는 듯했어요. ✍️

Among the crimson maple leaves, I met the upright spirit of Myeonam Choe Ik-hyeon.

Choe Ik-hyeon was a scholar-official of late Joseon who risked his life to speak truth in the face of a national crisis. In 1876, he opposed the opening of the ports and knelt before the royal palace with an axe in hand to submit his memorial. His resolve was clear: if the king rejected his plea, he asked to be beheaded with that very, the “axe memorial.” He later raised a righteous army to resist to the end, and died in exile on Tsushima Island.

Today, beneath the autumn leaves, I slowly hand-copied a passage from his memorial. As I transcribed it stroke by stroke with a brush, I felt as if the resolve of a scholar from over a century ago reached my fingertips. ✍️
