Has the AI industry finally recognised the dangers of the technology it is building?

A researcher leaves one of the world's leading AI companies with a warning that the race to build ever more powerful systems could end in human extinction. Days later, the chief executive of the same company calls for the industry to slow down.

In this episode AI Decoded examines the growing debate over AI safety, regulation and control. From fears that advanced systems could outpace human understanding to concerns over cyberattacks, biological threats and the challenge of containing increasingly powerful models, the programme asks whether the world's AI companies are moving too fast, and whether anyone can agree on how to slow down.

Our panel also explores AI "kill switches", international oversight, the role of governments, and whether rivalry between the United States and China makes meaningful cooperation impossible.

Presenter Christian Fraser and BBC AI correspondent Marc Cieslak are joined by Andrew Weber, former US Assistant Secretary of Defense for Nuclear, Chemical and Biological Defense Programs, and Max Corbridge, CEO and co-founder of Secure Agentics, to explore fears over AI-driven biological threats, the challenge of controlling increasingly powerful systems, and whether meaningful safeguards are possible.
