Can mathematics help us understand why diseases affect people so differently, and why some treatments work for certain patients but not others?
In this inaugural lecture, Professor Reiko Tanaka, Professor of Computational Systems Biology and Medicine in the Department of Bioengineering at Imperial College London, explores how mathematical models and computational approaches are helping to unravel the complexity of human biology.
Drawing on examples from eczema, asthma and infectious disease, Professor Tanaka will show how the body regulates itself, how these systems break down in disease, and how this work could help predict which treatments will be most effective for each patient.
This lecture is part of the Department of Bioengineering’s Inaugural Lecture series, celebrating Professor Tanaka’s research, collaborations and contribution to the department.
