Seo Il: The Leader Who Prepared Independence Through Education

In 1911, Seo Il crossed the Tumen River carrying not weapons, but a pen and his unwavering belief in education.

Born in Gyeongwon, Hamgyeong Province, he became an educator, a leader of Daejonggyo, and later the commander of the Northern Military Administration Office (Bukrogunjeongseo). Believing that "Before winning with weapons, a nation must educate its people," he founded schools and training centers where young Koreans learned scholarship and patriotism.

Many of these students later became officer cadets who fought in the historic Battle of Cheongsanri.

The victory, however, was followed by tragedy. The Gando Massacre and the Free City Incident devastated the independence movement. Overwhelmed by the loss of his comrades, Seo Il ultimately chose to end his own life.

This historical novel retells his remarkable life through the eyes of cadets, Daejonggyo followers, Japanese intelligence officers, and survivors of the Free City Incident, revealing not only the story of one man but also the spirit of an era.
